The finishing touches are being made to a joint NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) and the District Council safety improvement project at the Evans Street/Te Weka Street intersection on State Highway 1 (SH 1) in Timaru.
The project that started at beginning of November has seen the installation of new traffic signals and resurfacing the surrounding highway.
NZTA Highways Operations Manager Peter Connors says the job has been completed ahead of schedule. Testing of the new traffic signals will be carried out over the next few days. This is to ensure they are ready to be officially commissioned by Timaru Mayor Janie Annear and NZ Transport Agency Regional Director Southern Jim Harland at a function being held at 10am next Tuesday (20 December 2011).
“The Agency and Timaru District Council have worked closely together on this project that increases safety and will result in smoother traffic flows at one of the City’s busier intersections. Traffic is poised to increase even further at this intersection, which is part of the main route to the new Caroline Bay Aquatic Centre that is scheduled to open in the second quarter of next year.”
Mr Connors says The NZTA appreciates the patience of road users and nearby residents while this important work was carried out.
The project cost $470,000, including a $140,000 contribution from the Timaru District Council.
