The Transport Agency isn’t expecting further weather related overnight closures on South Island highways, but warns ice could be an issue on some highways tomorrow morning.
While the weather is improving, the large amount of melting snow that’s now around could cause icy conditions in inland Otago and Southland.
Motorists should watch for ice in shaded areas, be aware bridges stay slippery for longer and frost is more severe at daybreak.
To stay safe in these conditions drivers should slow down, avoid sudden braking, increase the following distance between their vehicle and the one in front of them and take extra care when cornering. They should also allow more travel time to get to their destination.
Before setting out their journey drivers are encouraged to check the latest highway conditions which are available at www.highwayinfo.govt.nz(external link) or on 0800 44 44 49.
