Improving the processing time of HPMV and 50MAX permits was high on the agenda at the HPMV Industry Reference Group Meeting in Wellington last week. The reference group is jointly hosted by the Road Transport Forum and the Transport Agency to ensure the roll-out of HPMVs is informed by insights from industry.

The day-long meeting provided an excellent opportunity for representatives from industry, the Transport Agency and the Police to discuss the hot topics of the day.
Industry expressed concern that the turnaround time for HPMV permits was still high. The Transport Agency’s Freight Director Harry Wilson said 50MAX permits were already turned around within a day or two, and the agency was working hard to bring processing times down for all HPMV permits. The target is five working days. “Industry will see a change,” Harry said.
Other topics discussed included progress with opening network access for 50MAX combinations, the potential role of Operator Rating System (ORS) in the permit application process, the WeighRight project and the draft policy for collecting Road User Charges from overloaded vehicles.
The next meeting will be in February 2014 and is timed to coincide with the start of the VDM Review Process.
