Labour Day Weekend drivers will benefit from the early completion of the first stage of the interim improvements at the State Highway 1/Hill Street intersection in Warkworth.
The NZ Transport Agency says the SH1 northbound approach to the intersection has been widened, resurfaced and remarked to provide additional capacity for traffic turning right to the Eastern Beaches.
“We’re delighted that we’ve been able to complete the work before the busy holiday weekend,” says the Transport Agency’s Highway Manager, Brett Gliddon. “A switch to an overnight closure of SH1 last Sunday night to enable our contractors, Wharehine, to complete all resurfacing work kept disruption to a minimum. We avoided the need to do that work during the day when traffic volumes are at their highest.”
Mr Gliddon thanked the community for its support during the first stages of the upgrade.
“The co-operation and patience we’re getting from people in the Warkworth area is essential to allow us to complete work as quickly as possible.”
Mr Gliddon says that after the holiday weekend, the focus will shift to widening the SH1 southbound approach to the intersection before Christmas, and to construct a wider shared path for walkers and cyclists before next Easter along SH1.
Traffic management measures remain in place during construction and people are asked to take care driving through the work site for the safety of themselves and contractors.
The Transport Agency is funding 70 percent and Auckland Transport 30 percent of the $1m upgrade project.
