The NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) is urging drivers to take care as the winter storm moves towards the Central North island, with icy road conditions and snow falls expected in the area from tomorrow (Thursday).
Motorists are advised to monitor weather forecasts and to visit the NZTA’s website www.nzta.govt.nz(external link), to check highway conditions (which will identify any detours and closures), before they set off on their journey.
Night time travel should be avoided if possible during heavy snow fall, as this makes driving conditions more challenging due to poor visibility.
The heavy snow forecast will impact on state highways around the mountain areas, as well as the Napier-Taupo highway road.
If you need to drive during heavy snow and are going through icy roads you should ensure your vehicle is in good working order, reduce your speed and increase your following distances.
The NZTA will be monitoring the approaching weather and patrolling the highways to assess road conditions. Ice and snow clearing treatments will be used, if necessary, to keep the road surface safe to drive on.
Road closures and detours are possible during heavy winter storm events, so drivers should allow extra time for their travels in case of any unexpected delays.
