The NZ Transport Agency is urging travellers in the Bay of Plenty to drive to the conditions, with moderate to heavy rain expected in parts of the region today and tomorrow.
The Met Service has issued a severe weather warning for the Bay of Plenty, with up to 100mm of rain expected to fall west of Te Puke in the 12 hours from 9pm Friday to 9am Saturday.
East of Te Puke, up to 140mm of rain is predicted in the ranges and other high areas, with up to 20mm per hour expected to fall at times.
People are advised that the heavy rain is likely to cause rivers to rise rapidly and may produce localised surface flooding and slips.
The Transport Agency’s Bay of Plenty Journey manager, Nigel D’Ath said it was important for travellers to drive to the conditions during wet weather.
“Wet roads can be very slippery, so to avoid crashes in this type of weather motorists should slow down and increase their following distances by using the four second rule,” Mr D’Ath said.
“To check that you are travelling four seconds behind the vehicle in front, follow the instructions for the two second rule, but count to four instead.”
“It’s also a good idea to check your car, as effective brakes, tyres, windscreen wipers, lights and steering are crucial in wet weather.”
