Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is holding another community pop-in event next Tuesday to find out what people think about speeds on State Highway 6 between Hope and Wakefield. Feedback closes on Friday, 7 February.
The Transport Agency is reviewing speeds on this stretch of road to make sure they are safe and appropriate.
Three people died and 18 were seriously injured in crashes on the road between 2009 and 2018. Some of the crashes have been at intersections.
On Tuesday, 28 January from 4.30pm until 7pm, Transport Agency staff will be at the Hope Community Church on Ranzau Road. People can drop-in any time during these hours to have their say.
The Transport Agency’s Regional Relationships Director Jim Harland says the team wants to hear what people think of the current speed limits and if there are any areas that feel more dangerous than others.
“We’ve had a range of feedback so far, both online and at our other community events last year.
“People have told us it’s difficult to judge the speed of oncoming vehicles and at times there is a lot of traffic, and that means some drivers make risky decisions, like pulling out when it is not safe,” he says.
The feedback will be considered alongside technical and safety data to help determine the next steps, which may include a formal consultation on speed limit changes.
“We know more development is planned and the population will grow, making this road even busier so we want to make sure the speed limits are right for this road. I’d encourage as many people as possible to get involved in this speed review so we can understand how the community feels about the current speed,” Mr Harland says.
People who can’t make it to the open day can go to the project website www.nzta.govt.nz/hope2wakefield(external link) for more information, and leave comments there.
