Safety improvement works for State Highway 2 in Wairarapa continue at pace, with Greytown and Carterton as the next locations for new raised pedestrian crossings.
Update 22 November
Because of recent bad weather, the start date for work on the Carterton raised crossing has been slightly delayed. It will now begin on Tuesday, 28 November, not Monday, 27 November as originally planned.

Safety improvement works for State Highway 2 in Wairarapa continue.
It is a continuation of work announced earlier this month – the raised pedestrian crossings are much more visible to traffic, are better designed for pedestrians and cyclists, to create a safer crossing platform. More importantly, the design significantly reduces the chance of death and injury to crossing users.
8 November 2023 media release: Promoting pedestrian safety – new crossing coming for Featherston
The Wellington Transport Alliance will build a new raised crossing in Greytown on Main Street, near Hastwell Street, starting this Monday (20 November).
A week later (27 November), work will begin on a crossing in Carterton on High Street near Pembroke Street.
Both crossings will take roughly a week to complete - weather permitting.
Every effort is being made to minimise disruption for road users. The work is timed to happen at night when fewer vehicles are on the road. However, stop/go traffic management will be in place, and drivers can expect short delays when travelling through the works area.
These works are weather dependent and timing may change. To stay up to date, please visit the Wellington Transport Alliance page and subscribe to email alerts.
