Green light for North End shopping centre signalised
pedestrian crossing

|

The Transport Agency plans to have a modern signalised pedestrian crossing to improve road safety on State Highway 1 at the North End shopping centre in Oamaru operating by the middle of this year.

Consultation on the proposal closed last month and attracted seventy-five submissions.

Transport Agency Otago-Southland Highways Manager Ian Duncan says we are pleased with the number of submissions. From these, it was clear that as a pedestrian safety measure that could be implemented relatively quickly, submitters preferred a signalised crossing, rather than retaining the existing crossing.

"Submitters also raised various alternative ideas they felt would improve road safety and ease traffic congestion in this area, including signalising the Frome Street to Caledonian Road intersection. While we understand concerns around traffic congestion at this intersection, signalising it isn’t a viable option, as the traffic light phasing would cause significant delays for highway traffic."

Installation of the new signalised crossing at the North End shopping centre is expected to be completed by the end of June. Business owners in the area and local residents will be given plenty of notice in advance of this work starting to allow an opportunity to work through any concerns.

Mr Duncan said this job costing an estimated $100,000 isn’t expected to cause any major disruptions for road users or businesses and residents in the area.
