The NZ Transport Agency says it hopes the hugely positive response to its new drink-drive ad campaign is a sign that young New Zealanders are ready to take up the challenge of speaking up when a mate is about to drive drunk.

The NZ Transport Agency says it hopes the hugely positive response to its new drink-drive ad campaign is a sign that young New Zealanders are ready to take up the challenge of speaking up when a mate is about to drive drunk.

NZTA Chief Executive Geoff Dangerfield says the agency started hearing from people almost as soon as the new ad went to air on Sunday evening (October 23).

“We’ve had a wave of great feedback from across New Zealand, all of it positive. We research and test all of our ads before they go to air to ensure they are relevant and reach the right people, but this one has gone gangbusters.

“But it’s the message here that is important – too many young lives are cut short and too much young potential is wasted from drink-driving, and we need young men to know that if they have the guts to speak up to stop a mate driving drunk they can do it without looking bad or killing the mood at a party.

“These aren’t bad kids – they’re normal young guys who can make bad choices, and too often there’s no-one there willing to stop them. It’s a barrier that we need to break through, and that’s what we’re trying to do by taking a funny approach to a serious issue.”
