From tomorrow, Wednesday 12 March, new Give Way markings are going in at Victoria Avenue adjacent to the McDonalds to make easier for trucks to enter the heavy vehicle bypass.
The Transport Agency is carrying out the work in conjunction with the Road Transport Federation and Invercargill City Council.
With the current Give Way rule it’s become increasingly difficult for trucks to make right turns from Dee Street into Victoria Avenue. The majority of vehicle using this section of Victoria Avenue are trucks, says Peter Robinson the Senior Network Manager for the Transport Agency.
“In effect we are reverting to the old right hand rule at this intersection, so left turn vehicles give way to the right. We expect this change to allow trucks to make better use of gaps in the traffic created the Gala Street traffic lights. At the moment truck and trailer units especially, have to wait for left turning traffic, making it very hard for them to safely access the heavy vehicle bypass he said.
Mr Robinson says the change will be monitored over the next few months to assess its effectiveness. If it doesn’t create the desired turning opportunities, other options including traffic lights may need to be considered.
Note: The installation will take place at 9am tomorrow, Wednesday 12th.
