Walkers and cyclists in the Tamahere community are a step closer to a safe crossing of State Highway 21 Airport Road, with funding confirmed to build an underpass near Wiremu Tamihana Drive.
Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is funding the underpass as part of its section of the Te Awa Cambridge to Hamilton shared path, with a final decision on construction of the underpass subject to the findings of detailed design and geotechnical testing of the ground conditions.
“Building an underpass under SH21 will provide a safe connection for Tamahere residents and walkers and cyclists using the Te Awa path to cross this busy road,” says Acting Director Regional Relationships Ross I’Anson.
“It means those living on the southern side of the highway will be able to safely access the shops, school and community centre on the northern side,” Mr I’Anson says.
Detailed design and testing are expected to take place in the first half of next year with construction of the underpass expected to begin in the second half of 2020.
The exact location of the underpass will be confirmed through this process, with the initial planning for a crossing under SH21 by the park to the north of Wiremu Tamihana Drive.
Meanwhile, a vulnerable users survey has been undertaken in response to community concerns about the east-west crossing of SH1, and the results of this are being assessed.
