The NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) announced today that funding has been approved for a vital link in the Nelson/Tasman cycleway network.
The NZTA regional director Jenny Chetwynd said construction on the link between the existing cycleway along Whakatu Drive and the Railway Reserve would begin before Christmas.
The new section would provide a safer passage for cyclists away from the State Highway 6 Richmond deviation road which was a high speed environment carrying about 20,000 vehicles a day, she said.
“It will give Richmond residents the chance to have safer cycling and walking opportunities,” Ms Chetwynd said. “The new section would also provide a vital link in the proposed Tasman loop cycleway.”
The total cost of works was estimated to be about $600,000.
The cycleway follows extensive consultation with the local councils, cycle groups and other community groups.
