From agricultural vehicles to illegal street cars – safe
journeys the focus of 2014 Fieldays

A modified “boy racer” car, the newly revised agricultural vehicles guide, and a range of road safety initiatives are on offer at this year’s NZ Transport Agency stand at next week’s Fieldays.

The main display will see an impounded street car now used as a demonstration vehicle, which shows a range of illegal modifications. Those viewing it will also be shown how to check tyre tread depth, and can receive a free handy tread depth measure.

The Transport Agency’s stand at Fieldays, from 11-14 June, will be at site O21 on the corner of C street and O road, close to Kiwi’s Best Kitchen

The Safer Journeys strategy with its four key elements – Safer roads, safer vehicles, safer drivers and safe speeds – will be the focus of the stand.

“We’ve recently updated our Agricultural Vehicles Guide and will have staff on hand to talk about the safe and legal use of these vehicles on our roads” says Midlands Access and Use Manager David Pearks.

“We know from previous years at Fieldays that visitors are interested in a huge range of transport related matters – whether it be trucks and freight, big roading projects, driver licensing, rural vehicle servicing and maintenance, or changes to alcohol limits.

“Our knowledgeable staff will be on hand to answer all queries, supported by a range of videos, posters, leaflets and fact sheets. Fieldays is a great opportunity for people to ask that burning question, find out more and connect with all things transport sector related.”

The Safe System approach to reducing death and serious injuries in crashes will be demonstrated through a range of safety initiatives, along with local and national road safety campaigns which will also be on display. These will be supported by Waikato Road Safety Co-ordinator Megan Jolly who will be on hand to talk about promoting road safety on rural roads.

Information about highways projects, including the Waikato Expressway and Tauranga Eastern Link Roads - two Roads of National Significance projects - which will improve safety and reduce travel times, will also be at the stand.
