Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is reminding road users that Remutaka Hill Road will be closed overnight for five consecutive nights from 9pm Sunday 24 November to 4am Friday 29 November.
The night-time closure is the first of three blocks of five-night closures planned over the next 12 months to enable road crews to safely undertake essential maintenance and slip prevention works.
Regional Transport Systems Manager Mark Owen says having the road fully closed to traffic is necessary to ensuring maintenance crews can carry out the work safely.
“Remutaka Hill Road is steep, winding and narrow which makes it very difficult to maintain. Full closures of the road will help ensure that our crews are working in a safe environment and that the work can be completed to a higher standard.
“The night-time closure will also significantly reduce the number of daytime disruption for road users – the two block closures that occurred in March 2019 reduced the inconvenience of stop/go works to just five in the following six months.”
Access will be available for emergency services throughout the closure.
If people have an urgent need to travel over the hill, a limited shuttle van service is available and should be booked in advance. Email remutaka@nzta.govt.nz Monday to Friday.
