The first stage of safety improvements to State Highway 3 (SH3) between Waitara and Bell Block, with the removal of the northbound passing lane between Mahoetahi Road and Raleigh Street are now complete.
Work to reseal the 1km section of road and remove the passing lane was successfully completed by Downer late last week, says NZ Transport Agency Acting Director of Regional Relationships, Ross I’Anson.
“We are pleased to have completed this first stage of the Waitara to Bell Block safety improvement project as scheduled and with minimal disruption to the community.
“By removing the northbound passing lane near Richmond Road, we have been able to introduce a wide shoulder making it safer for cyclists and for drivers wanting to pull over.
“We’ve also been able to mark a wide centreline on the road, providing greater separation for opposing traffic and reducing the likelihood of head-on crashes,” Mr I’Anson says.
Further safety improvements to SH3 between Waitara and Bell Block are planned, with the NZ Transport Agency continuing to work through the design phase for these improvements over the winter months of 2019.
Implementation of these safety improvements is currently planned for the summer of 2019–20 and into 2020-21.
