The $5.9M Hayr Road Bridge connects Olsen Ave and Melrose Road, to Carr Road. The bridge will be one-way only towards Melrose Road for the next month, while tie-in work is completed at the western end.
The 160 metre bridge is 5.5 metres high and is made up of seven spans, each comprised of six concrete beams. It will carry local traffic over the new SH20 motorway which is still being constructed.
The bridge joins three bridges already built for local motorists at May Road, Dominion Road and Hillsborough Road and two footbridges used exclusively by local pedestrians and cyclists at Keith Hay Park and Ernie Pinches Street. Dominion Road Bridge which partially opened in October last year is now open in both directions.
The $186M four-kilometre SH20 Mt Roskill Extension project is scheduled to open in March next year and is part of the central section of the Western Ring Route. The strategic route will eventually provide an alternative route between Manukau City and Albany via SH1, SH20, SH16 and SH18 to SH1 at Constellation Drive.
