The NZ Transport Agency is asking the community for their views on a proposed roundabout at the intersection of State Highway 1 and Elles Road in Invercargill, to increase safety and reduce crashes at this high risk intersection.
The intersection has been identified as high-risk due to the large number of crashes in the past five years: three serious crashes, two minor injury and one non-injury crash.
Transport Agency Project Manager Jason Forbes says there are several safety issues at this intersection, including the road layout, increasing numbers of heavy truck movements and a general increase in traffic growth.
“We think a roundabout is the best way to improve safety and reduce the number of crashes at this intersection. But we want community feedback on this option to see if it has support, or if the community has other ideas and alternatives we need to consider at this early stage.”
People can their say in a couple of different ways. They can attend a public information day(external link) on Wednesday, 27 September, from 3 pm to 7 pm at the South Alive Community Hub, South City Mall, and/or complete an online feedback form(external link) . Submissions close at 5pm on Friday, 13 October 2017.

Mr Forbes said benefits of this project include greater safety for all road users and more efficient connections to the local road network. This work will also improve the appearance of the intersection, as well as the Invercargill to Bluff leg of the Southern Scenic Route.
Work on this $3 million project could start early in 2019 and is expected to take about a year to complete.
