Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency and KiwiRail are making two Featherston railway level crossings safer as part of a number of level crossing improvements around New Zealand.
Waka Kotahi Regional Transport Systems Manager Mark Owen says the work will help prevent deaths and serious injuries at the level crossings on State Highway 53 Revans Street and State Highway 2 Fitzherbert Street.
“Both of these crossings are right in town and get a lot of use by pedestrians. For this reason, we’ll be putting in pedestrian mazes at both crossings – these are specially designed walkways that slow people down before they cross and prompt them to look up and down the track before crossing.
“For drivers and people on bikes and motorcycles, we’re improving the signs and markings around these crossings, a simple but effective way of warning people they are approaching a railway line.”
Drivers should expect slight delays while this work is underway in the coming weeks. A temporary speed limit reduction will be in place around the crossing and the road shoulder will be closed. A temporary pedestrian crossing will mean people can still cross on foot.
These improvements are part of the Safe Network Programme, delivering safety improvements on high-risk routes across New Zealand to make roads more forgiving of people’s mistakes. The programme focuses on safe roads and roadsides, safe and appropriate speeds, and safe level crossings.
