Essential deck repair work that started last month to improve the Kawarau Falls Bridge on State Highway 6 between Frankton and Kelvin Heights, is going to take about two weeks longer to complete than expected.
The repairs that involve partial night time closures between 11pm and 6am from Sunday night to Friday mornings excluding holidays, with 10 minute periods on the hour where motorists can cross the bridge, were expected to be completed by 30th April.
NZ Transport Agency Senior Network Manager John Jarvis says due to the unpredictable nature of the work progress has been a little slower than anticipated and it’s now likely to take until about Friday 16th May to complete the job.
“Our contractor has been doing a top quality job on the replacement boards to about 35% of the bridge to give bridge users an improved ride ahead of the new ski season.”
The repairs are part of an ongoing maintenance programme on the bridge and will result in a smoother ride for bridge users and reduce rattle and clatter from the decking.
Mr Jarvis says the cost of the work is around $150,000 and the two week delay won’t add to that.
