Expect heavier traffic on Whanganui to Raetihi detour this weekend

|

The NZ Transport Agency is reminding road users ahead of Labour Weekend that State Highway 4 south of Raetihi remains closed following a major slip.

The detour route via State Highway 1 through Taihape is expected to busier than normal for those travelling north this evening and throughout the day on Saturday, due to the long weekend. It is also expected to be busy on Monday 28 October for all southbound traffic heading home.

“Congestion and delays are inevitable at peak times but the worst of the frustrations can be eased if everyone leaves plenty of time for their journey, plans ahead before leaving home and drives to the conditions,” Regional Transport Systems Manager Mark Owen says.

“We are continuing to monitor the State Highway 4 slip site and remain focused on finding a safe solution for reinstating the road as soon as we can.

“Due to the scale and complexity of the slip, which is continuing to move, this is going to take some time and effort but we hope to be able to provide an update about next steps soon.

“In the meantime, we are taking on feedback from locals and working with the Ruapehu District Council to install new signage in the coming weeks to remind travellers that the Raetihi township is still open for business.

“We would like to thank everyone who attended the public meetings in Raetihi last week and continue to encourage locals to share their feedback and concerns about the road closure.”
