Motorists travelling on State Highway 2, north of Tauranga, are advised to expect delays and allow plenty of extra travel time as work on the Te Puna roundabout continues
The two-lane roundabout will replace the Te Puna / Minden Road intersection, significantly improving safety for motorists travelling on the route.
Work started in June 2016, with the initial focus on relocating power services, removing the old Te Puna Hall, and forming a new local road into the BP station.
The Transport Agency’s Highways Manager Niclas Johansson says work to construct the new roundabout and local road links is currently underway. Weather dependent, the project is expected to be complete in July 2017.
“The project is at a critical stage, with the contractors working hard to widen the site, construct the roundabout and seal the road before winter sets in,” he says.
“We’re working hard to minimise disruptions, but due to the nature of this work and the high daily traffic volumes (20,000 vehicles each day), some delays are inevitable over the next few months, and people should factor in an additional ten to fifteen minutes for journeys during the morning or evening peak,” Mr Johansson says.
Mr Johansson says the roundabout is part of an overall plan to reduce death and serious injury crashes on State Highway 2 between Waihi and Tauranga.
“This roundabout will make a big difference in terms of safety once it is finished,” he says.
“Roundabouts naturally slow traffic and reduce the chance of head on or side impact crashes, reducing the risk of death or serious injury if someone makes a mistake and crashes.
“We understand the disruption is frustrating and we appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding while work is underway.”
