Summer is the time the NZ Transport Agency undertakes most of its road works, to keep state highways and bridges well maintained and safe for drivers and all road users.
However, over this next week (14-18 December) the Transport Agency will be finishing off many jobs around the state highway network, ready for works shutdown midday this Friday, 18 December. Work sites will reopen from midday, 6 January, 2016.
Transport Agency Journey Manager Lee Wright urges motorists to keep to the speed restrictions around work crews. “We want all our crews to have a happy, safe Christmas with their families. They work hard all year in all kinds of weathers to keep the road network operating.
“We know people have a lot of pressures at this time of the year, which makes it all the more important to build in time and not stress about short delays. We all want to have a safe holiday,” said Ms Wright.
Some sites will remain with speed restrictions over the Christmas/ New Year break period due to road conditions.
“We encourage people to plan their journeys over the summer. A Summer Journeys webpage(external link) has been created so people can find out what delays may be present in the areas they are heading to in December and January.”
The Police have a *555 service(external link) operating so that anyone who observes unsafe driving can report the details for further follow up. This is a free mobile phone service for road incidents which are urgent but not life-threatening eg non-injury crashes, erratic driving, traffic congestion, breakdowns and obstructions on the highway. Urgent/ life-threatening event calls should continue to be made to 111.
