Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency advises chipsealing works will commence next week, from 1 November 2021, in multiple locations around the Ōpōtiki, Kawerau and Whakatāne districts.
These works are part of the Waka Kotahi spring/summer road maintenance programme, which will see repairs and resurfacing carried out on state highways across the Bay of Plenty.
Chipseal sites, Otamarakau, Pikowai, Edgecumbe, Kawerau
The following sites will operate under Stop/Go traffic management with a 30km/h temporary speed limit in place during the work.
It is important motorists adhere to the relevant temporary speed limits during these works to avoid damage to their vehicles and ensure their safety and that of other road users and road workers.
For at least 24 hours after a site has been sealed, and before it is swept, it continues to operate under a reduced temporary speed limit while vehicles travel over the seal and help “bed in” the chip and to reduce the risk of chip damaging windscreens. The site is then swept, excess chip is removed, and the temporary speed limit remains in place until line marking has been reinstated (within 48 hours of the site being sealed, weather dependent).

State Highway 5, Reporoa
Work to strengthen and rebuild a section of SH5 between Reporoa Road and Wharepapa Road to ensure safety and resilience continues under Stop/Go traffic management with a 30km/h temporary speed limit in place between 6.30am and 6.30pm and traffic signals overnight when appropriate. Minor delays and allow additional time for their journeys or consider an alternate route.
State Highway 35, Houpoto
Works to repair an unstable section of embankment on SH35 at Houpoto, approximately three kilometres west of Maraenui Pa Road are underway and are expected to be completed in mid-December 2021. Temporary traffic management including a 30km/h temporary speed limit and Stop/Go will be in place between 7am and 5pm and traffic lights in place overnight from 5pm to 7am, Monday to Friday. Due to site constraints, Waka Kotahi encourages operators of over dimension vehicles to contact them to ensure that their vehicles can pass through the site safely.
