Important information for drivers
Lower North Island:
- Resurfacing works are planned for State Highway 2 in the Hutt Valley on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights. This requires stop/go traffic management and short detours, and drivers can expect delays. It is essential people travelling between Wellington and Wairarapa factor these works into their plans, as Remutaka Hill closures are also planned this coming week.
- Regular users of State Highway 2 Remutaka Hill need to prepare for the next round of scheduled night closures for maintenance and safety improvements. There will be five nights of closures starting this Sunday, 14 April.
- Timed to coincide with the Remutaka Hill works, contractors will also be fixing a culvert on State Highway 2 in Featherston. This will see night closures and a short detour required for drivers travelling through Featherston.
- Ongoing repairs to the Tauwharenīkau Bridge on State Highway 53 – Featherston to Martinborough – will see road closures over the coming weeks. Local road detours are available but will add to travel times
- In Wellington, the Tinakori offramp on the urban motorway will be closed for repairs and resurfacing from Sunday, 14 April to Friday, 19 April. This will particularly affect residents in the suburbs of Karori, Northland, Thorndon, Wadestown, Crofton Downs, and Khandallah.
Top of the South Island:
- Changes are being made to the traffic management for the safety barrier works on State Highway 60 Ruby Bay Bypass. Work areas are being extended, meaning drivers will see additional contraflow.
- Nightworks are planned for State Highway 1 Picton Elevation from Monday, 15 April. They will run concurrently with day works until the slow vehicle lane is repaired and restored next month.
- Repairs are planned for the Newton River Bridge on State Highway 6 Upper Buller Gorge at the end of this month. The highway will be closed for three days while this work is carried out. People travelling between Nelson/Tasman and Westport will need to detour via Inangahua, Reefton, and Springs Junction.
The details below outline the main planned state highway roadworks occurring in the greater Wellington region and the top of the South Island over the coming week (from Saturday, 13 April). Further details about regional state highway conditions and roadworks are also published on our website:
