The NZ Transport Agency is urging Wellington motorists to take extra care on the roads tonight and tomorrow morning, with a severe weather watch in place for the lower North Island.
“Wind and rain make travelling on the roads more dangerous. It’s easier to lose control, and it’s harder to regain control. If the weather is looking particularly rough, we urge people to avoid or delay non-essential travel. It’s much safer to stay put with a hot drink until it eases up.”
Mr Owen warned that strong winds are expected on the State Highway 2 Rimutaka Hill Road, and could present a particular risk to high sided vehicles and motorcyclists. Contractors will be monitoring weather conditions, and motorists should have a contingency plan in the event that the road needs to be closed for the safety of the public. Motorists are urged to check online before setting out on journeys over the Rimutakas, and consider taking the train.
Torrential rain is also forecast during the morning peak in Kapiti and Wellington.
“Traffic is likely to be heavy and visibility will be poor, so we ask motorists to allow extra time for travel, and if you’re able to, delay your journey.
“We saw how bad weather caused the motorways to clog up last week, and we’re expecting more of the same in the morning.”
Motorists are also encouraged to consider donning a raincoat and using jumping on the bus or train.
