Diary note – SH20 pylon lift tonight

A 35-metre steel pylon will be erected tonight at the site of the new Beachcroft Avenue footbridge over the Southwestern Motorway (SH20) at Onehunga.

The lift is expected to start at approximately 11.30pm and to take one and a half hours.  The northbound lanes of the Southwestern Motorway will be closed between Neilson Street and Hillsborough Road.

The large white pylon, which will be on a lean, will support a new cable-stayed footbridge that is expected to become a landmark on Auckland’s planned Western Ring Route.  The pylon was manufactured in Taranaki and has been assembled on site over the past two days.

The new Beachcroft footbridge will replace an existing bridge that is too short to fit across all lanes of the widened motorway below.  It will be a 3.5-metre wide shared cycle and pedestrian bridge connecting Hillsborough and Onehunga.

The best vantage point for photographs will be Seacliffe Avenue on the Hillsborough side of the motorway.

Media enquiries tonight should be directed to the Manukau Harbour Crossing communication manager Helen Cook on 027 230 2566 or to 0800 SH20 MHX (0800 7420 649).
