The NZ Transport Agency says the northbound lanes of Auckland's Northern Motorway (State Highway 1) are likely to remain closed for several more hours.

Both the north and southbound lanes of the motorway were closed between the Tristram Avenue and Constellation Drive interchanges at about 2.30 this morning because of a Police incident.

Southbound lanes re-opened at 6.40am but the Transport Agency says it has been advised by the Police that a detailed crime scene examination continues to keep the keep the northbound lanes closed.

“The closure is likely to remain in place throughout the morning at least,” says the Transport Agency’s Regional Traffic Operations Manager, Kathryn Musgrave.

Mrs Musgrave says the NZTA is using social media like twitter(@NZTAAkl), radio,  and its motorway variable message signs to keep people informed of driving conditions.

“Northbound traffic is flowing relatively well on key arterial routes on the North Shore and the Northwestern (SH16) and Hobsonville/Upper Harbour SH18) motorways, but we asking people to plan or delay their journeys to avoid the risk of held up by congestion.

“We appreciate the patience and care all drivers have shown this morning and we are doing everything possible to keep both north and southbound routes around the city flowing as freely as possible,” Mrs Musgrave says.

Southbound queues on the motorway are starting to clear but morning peak traffic remains heavy.
