Roading crews will return to State Highway 2 south of Gisborne next week for resurfacing work at Muriwai.
The stretch of road between Nicks Head Station Road and Maraenui Road will close between 8pm and 5am each night from next Monday 26 February to Thursday 29 February. The work will be complete and the road reopened at 5am on Friday.
To minimise disruption during next week’s work, two nightly convoys will be in place to safely guide vehicles through the Muriwai worksite in both directions.
Road users will be asked to be at the closure points at Maraenui Road and Nicks Head Station Road by 10.30pm and 1.30am to wait for the pilot vehicle to guide them through.
This overnight work remains weather dependent and NZTA advises all road users to regularly check our interactive Journey Planner for up to date, daily information. If the wet weather delays work at any stage, the road will be open that night.
This work is important resurfacing work to improve the condition and resilience of the network post-Cyclone Gabrielle.
NZ Transport Agency System Manager for Hawke’s Bay / Tairāwhiti Martin Colditz says crews have been busy week in week out resurfacing SH2 north and south of Gisborne.
“We realise the disruption this is causing, but the resurfacing work will ultimately result in a longer-lasting, more resilient stretch of road.”
Details of further resurfacing in Gisborne, including SH2 and SH35 Urban sections, will follow once schedules are confirmed.
Meanwhile, repair work begins further south on Mangaturanga Bridge at Raupunga to enable crews to repair the bridge deck.
The four nights of closures will begin on Monday 26 February and is scheduled to be complete on Friday 1 March at 5am. The work will be carried out each night between 9pm and 5am.
