The Transport Agency has awarded a contract to Fulton Hogan Limited for a new roundabout that will significantly improve access from State highway 6 (SH6) to the Glenda Drive industrial area at Frankton near Queenstown.
The roundabout will connect the future Eastern Access Road to SH 6 and some commercial developments on the northern side of Queenstown Airport.
Transport Agency Acting Southern Business Unit Manager Ian Duncan says, the $7.5million contract is jointly funded by Queenstown Lakes District Council and the Transport Agency. The developers on Frankton Flats are also making a significant contribution to the cost of the State highway roundabout at Glenda Drive.
Fulton Hogan’s team that will work on this project is drawn largely from its staff in the Southern Lakes Region and local subcontractors.
Mr Duncan said work is getting underway with speed restrictions in place to ensure the safety of road users. Two-way traffic will be maintained throughout the project.
The whole contract is due for completion in October. However, an interim milestone at the end of April, will see Glenda Drive traffic utilising the new roundabout while the existing intersection is reconfigured.
The Transport Agency apologises for any inconvenience to drivers while work on this project is being carried out. When completed, motorists can look forward to improved traffic flows and greater levels of safety at the Glenda Drive intersection.
