From 19 August to 27 September 2024, NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) is consulting on the revised 'Medical aspects of fitness to drive: a guide for health practitioners'. The guide assists health practitioners in making decisions about their patients’ fitness to drive.
NZTA is seeking feedback on the proposed changes from health practitioners as well as impacted industry organisations and interest groups, such as consumer support groups. This feedback will inform the final version of the updated guide, planned for release later in the year.
This is the first significant review of the guide in over 10 years. Since the last review, advancements in medical technologies and practices mean the existing version of the guide needs updating.
In reviewing the guide, NZTA updated medical guidelines and standards, considered coroners’ recommendations, improved explanation of fitness to drive assessment and reporting obligations, and the accessibility to hold a licence for some people with certain medical conditions.
“Medical assessments supported by Medical aspects of fitness to drive play an important part in determining if a patient is fit to drive or not. They also help medical practitioners and NZTA decide if licence conditions are needed for road safety reasons,” says NZTA National Manager Regulatory System Design Chris Rodley.
