Construction starts to improve safety at Emerald Glen

The NZ Transport Agency will improve safety for Kapiti motorists with the construction of a new road between the southern end of Emerald Glen Road and the northern side of the MacKays Crossing roundabout which joins State Highway 1, approximately one kilometre south of Paraparaumu on the Kapiti Coast.

NZ Transport Agency State Highways Manager Rob Whight said an iwi blessing, which took place on 8 September, paved the way for the start of the construction of the Emerald Glen connection, scheduled to start on 15 September.

“Works will include the construction of a bridge at the MacKays Crossing end of the new road, the installation of culverts and a new road that will align with the cul-de-sac at the end of Emerald Glen Road.”

“The project team aims to complete the road by the end of March 2011. Temporary access for residents and emergency services will be provided by 9 January 2011 when the railway level crossing, known as Lynch’s Crossing, is closed by KiwiRail’s double tracking of the line.”

“The new road will provide safer access to SH1 for local residents by addressing safety risks to vehicles and cyclists using the Waterfall Road intersection once the double tracking is completed and the rail service begins using both tracks in early 2011.”
