The NZ Transport Agency has closed the state highway between Springfield and Arthur’s Pass National Park due to extremely high winds in the area this afternoon.
“We apologise to road users for this inconvenience but safety is a priority and while the winds stay extreme, this is a short term protection,” said Lee Wright, Transport Agency Journey Manager.
“We will reassess the closure later tonight so drivers should check our web map(external link) for updates.”
The alternative route is State Highway 7 via Lewis Pass which is still open but a strong wind warning is in place. Motorists are advised to take extreme care or delay their travel.
The Met Service is forecasting severe gales for much of the South Island and Greymouth had thunderstorms this afternoon.
