The NZ Transport Agency is planning changes to Wiri Station Road in Manukau from Labour Weekend, to improve connections in the area as part of work to complete the new connection between the Southern (SH1) and Southwestern (SH20) Motorways.
The eastbound lanes of Wiri Station Road will be closed between Lambie Drive and Davies Avenue from 9pm Friday 22 October. Then from 9pm Friday 29 October Wiri Station Road will be closed in both directions between Lambie Drive and Davies Avenue, and will remain closed until early December.
People can access Manukau City Centre and the Westfield Mall via Lambie Drive and Ronwood Avenue. Signposted detours and electronic signs will be in place to help with directions.
A new section of Manukau Station Road will be opened from Monday 1 November. This new road will give motorists a direct connection from the Manukau City Centre to Lambie Drive Interchange and the new SH20 motorway.
The NZTA is expecting to complete the work without disrupting shoppers using the mall.
"We're aiming to get the bulk of the final construction work done now so that our project team can be out of the area well before the busy Christmas shopping period in December. We're ensuring that the main entrances to the mall and carpark are kept open at all times during the changes to the local roads," says the NZTA's State Highways Manager for Auckland Tommy Parker.
At the SH1-20 Interchange, a new SH1 to SH20 ramp will be opened today (Thursday 21 October). This short link runs underneath Redoubt Road and provides a direct connection to the SH20 westbound lanes. At the same time there will be road layout changes on SH1 approaching Redoubt Road off-ramp. Mr Parker says motorists should drive with care to ensure they are in the correct lane.
The $220M Manukau Extension motorway connects the Southwestern (SH20) and Southern Motorways (SH1) at Manukau City. It is being opened progressively in three stages between August and December. The motorway forms the southern gateway to the Western Ring Route. When completed, the ring route will provide a 48 kilometre alternative to SH1 between Manukau and Albany via SH20, SH16 and SH18.
The NZTA thanks motorists for their patience and co-operation while the local road changes take place.
