Changes for key intersection in Whangarei

|

As the next stage of work to improve State Highway 1 in Whangarei gets underway, drivers using the intersection of Selwyn Avenue and Western Hills Drive (SH1) are advised of significant changes being put in place from next Saturday (10 May).

The changes include:-

  • Selwyn Avenue West will be temporarily closed to Western Hills Drive. Drivers will be unable to access Selwyn Avenue West from Western Hills Drive.
  • The shared through and left turn into Selwyn Avenue West from SH1 will be closed.
  • The dedicated left turn and through right on Selwyn Avenue East will change to a shared left and right turn only.

The NZ Transport Agency says the layout changes at the intersection will remain in place until September.

The Transport Agency upgrade includes widening the existing highway, construction of new footpaths, new traffic signals and the relocation underground of overhead power lines.

The work will complete the upgrade between Western Hills Drive to the Caltex Service Station, and from the Rust Avenue Bridge to 5th Avenue on Selwyn Avenue.

“These changes from Saturday do mean restricted access to the intersection, and it will change how people get around the city,” says the Transport Agency’s Acting Highway Manager, Steve Mutton. “We ask that people do take some time to think about how these changes will affect them and how they travel. Please be patient and give yourself some time to get use to the new layout.”

The project is due to be completed next Spring.

The Transport Agency is working with Whangarei District Council to improve the state highway through Whangarei. The improvements will help manage growing traffic numbers, improve safety and make travel easier for locals and visitors travelling in and around Whangarei. The improvements also include improved safety for people who walk and cycle.
