Motorists will soon notice more changes on State Highway 1 near Takanini as the NZ Transport Agency progresses its project to widen Auckland’s Southern Motorway.
The changes to both north and southbound traffic between Alfriston Road and Hill Road includes narrowed lanes and a reduced 80kph speed zone.
There will also be changes to the southbound merge lane after Hill Road where the motorway reduces from three lanes to two. The merge lane will be reduced in length and end shortly after the Hill Road Bridge.
The Southern Corridor Improvements are creating an extra lane in both directions and upgrading the Takanini Interchange to improve safety and more consistent journey times.
“Reducing the lanes and the speed limit through the area means we can keep traffic moving and create safe work zones so that construction crews can work in a safe environment throughout the day.”
“The project team is working hard to have as little impact as possible on road users, however the temporary changes and closures may have an impact on traffic and we ask motorists to allow extra time for their journey while these traffic management measures are in place,” says Brett Gliddon, the Transport Agency’s Auckland Highway Manager.
“We understand there have already been a lot of changes through this project area and we’re really grateful for the patience and careful driving motorists have shown so far.”
The work is weather dependent and will go ahead on the next available day if it’s postponed.

The $268 million project being delivered by the NZ Transport Agency on behalf of the Government is expected to be completed in 2018. It extends from Manukau to Papakura along State Highway 1 and will improve safety and journey reliability on Auckland’s Southern Motorway. Extra southbound lanes will be completed in early 2017 as part of the Western Ring route construction.
The Southern Corridor Improvements Project is the second of four Government accelerated transport projects in the Auckland region which supports current investment in the Western Ring Route and the regional connections south of Auckland.
