The NZ Transport Agency is urging drivers to keep a close eye on conditions and take extra care on the roads with snow to low levels forecast to continue in the Central North Island.
“Roads throughout the Central Plateau are likely to be affected by snow and ice today and right through the weekend. We don’t want anyone’s weekend to end in tragedy, and we’re urging people to keep an eye on the conditions and to consider delaying travel if the weather deteriorates.
“For those who are driving please take extra care. That means slowing down, increasing your following distances and being patient,” said Transport Agency Regional Performance Manager Karen Boyt.
Ms Boyt said snow could potentially affect the Desert Road and other parts of SH1, as well as SH 46 and SH47 through National Park, SH4 and SH49.
“If you’re travelling through the Central Plateau it’s a good idea to check which roads are open before you leave and to ensure that you have plenty of warm clothing and food and water with you in case of road closures or delays.”
Drivers are urged to check the latest driving conditions on the Transport Agency’s traffic map(external link) or by ringing 0800 44 44 49 before travelling, and the MetService’s snow forecast(external link) for the latest winter weather conditions.
