Work has started on repairs to a section of storm-damaged State Highway 10 near Kaeo in Northland, and the NZ Transport Agency is advising all drivers that care will be needed travelling through the work-site.
The repairs are being made at Kaeo Hill just north of Waiare Road. A section of the highway subsided during a storm last March, and later investigations by NZTA contractors discovered further stability concerns that also need to be fixed.
The NZTA’s acting State Highways Manager for Auckland and Northland, Steve Mutton, says it makes good sense to complete both jobs at once.
“We’ll do everything we can to minimise any disruption, but people should allow a little more time for their travel – there’s only one lane through the work site and traffic will be controlled by stop/go lights,” Mr Mutton says.
An earth wall will be built to restore the highway shoulder swept away by an underslip during the storm, and a series of large steel rods called “soil nails” will be driven 6m into the ground to stabilise the highway itself. Repairs will take four weeks.
“There won’t be a lot of room and we ask all road users to take care for the safety of themselves and their passengers, and also for the safety of our workers,” Mr Mutton says.
