Drivers who normally travel on State Highway 73, between Canterbury and the West Coast via Arthur’s Pass, will need to take the Lewis Pass (SH7 via Reefton and Waipara) this Sunday and Monday nights.
The Rough Creek Bridge approach sealing requires a full two nights of closure to complete it, so Sunday night, 24 March and Monday night, 25 March – 9 pm to 6 am – has been scheduled.
“The eastern approach to the single lane Rough Creek bridge, on the Canterbury side of Arthur’s Pass Village, is being upgraded and there is no local detour available,” says Senior Project Manager for the NZ Transport Agency Chris Collins.
If it is wet those nights, work will shift to the next dry nights, so keep up to date at this site:

While all through traffic is stopped by the Rough Creek Bridge work on Sunday night, the Transport Agency’s maintenance crews will take advantage of the lack of traffic to work on the Bealey Bridge, about 10 kms from Arthur’s Pass on the Canterbury side.
Anyone driving locally at this spot will be delayed between 9 pm and 6 am for up to 50 minutes at a time.
Traffic will be able to cross the Bealey Bridge at the top of each hour for ten minutes.
“The Transport Agency thanks all drivers who will be inconvenienced by this work for their patience and encourages everyone to take care, day and night, around road crews and temporary traffic management sites,” says Mr Collins.
If it is wet, this work may also be pushed out. Check for updates:
