The NZ Transport Agency is encouraging Kelvin Heights residents to muck-in tomorrow and help with plantings associated with landscaping work at the new State Highway 6 / Peninsula Road intersection near Queenstown.
The safety upgrade was largely completed in December and provides improved visibility, especially for vehicles turning right from Peninsula Road on to State Highway 6.
NZTA Project Manager Nick Rodger says only landscaping is required to complete this project. Construction work associated with this intersection upgrade meant native plantings and landscaping carried out in the area by the Kelvin Heights Community Association had to be removed. Because of this connection it only seemed right to involve both the Association and the local community in the new landscaping work.
Mr Rodger said planting is being carried out in an area where there is no safety risk from passing traffic. Depending on how many people turn up on the day, as much as 20 percent of the landscaped area could be replanted. Remaining work will be completed by the contractor over the next week.
The total cost of the landscaping is around $70,000.
The community planting day starts at 9am tomorrow near the SH6/ Peninsula Road intersection.
