The NZ Transport Agency is advising drivers to allow more time for travel between Northland and Auckland because the Brynderwyn Hill section of State Highway 1 will be closed frequently at night during November for improvements to the road.
“We apologise for any inconvenience to travellers, but total road closures at night are the most effective way of getting the improvements done quickly and safely on this narrow section of highway” said the NZTA’s State Highways Manager for Auckland and Northland, Tommy Parker.
“Detours will be in place, but we would advise people to plan their travel and allow up to 30 minutes more if they are driving between Whangarei and Auckland at night,” Mr Parker added.
The night time closures start on Monday, 9 November, and will continue over a three week period.
The road will be closed from 8pm to 6am between Shoemaker Road at Waipu to the intersection of State Highways 1 and 12 at Brynderwyn.
In the first week, the road will be closed on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights. During the following two weeks, the closures will be on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights.
When the road is closed, through traffic will be diverted through Waipu, Waipu Cove and Mangawhai. The NZTA will have people on duty at key intersections and on patrol along the diversion route to help motorists.
“It’s a large diversion and some people may be unfamiliar with the route in the dark, and we want to do everything we can to make sure they arrive safely at their destination,” Mr Parker said.
Emergency vehicles will continue to have access over the Brynderwyns during the closures.
The Brynderwyn improvements include a complete re-surfacing of the 2.5 kilometre-long section of highway, new road markings, repairs to culverts and guard rails, improvements to drainage, and vegetation control.
