The new system, which includes two lane barrier moving vehicles and a concrete barrier, replaces the current moveable lane barrier in use since 1990.
"The new machine will improve safety and traffic capacity on the bridge, particularly at peak times," said Wayne McDonald, the NZ Transport Agency's Regional Director for Auckland/Northland.
The new machine will be able to shift the barrier in about 20 minutes – half the time it takes now – and the new concrete lane barrier is not as wide as the old one, providing some more room for vehicles.
This weekend's changeover involves removing the existing 2.2km length of moveable barrier piece by piece and installing its replacement from Saturday night through to early Monday morning.
Temporary lane changes will be in place while the new barrier is installed.
"We will do all we can to minimise any inconvenience to motorists," Mr McDonald says. "However, we expect to have some delays and advise motorists to allow some extra time for their journeys. Lane changes will be clearly signposted so it’s a matter of being alert and driving with caution at night."
