Auckland Council polishes its Unitary Plan

Auckland’s Central and local government, transport agencies and the public are working together to plan the city’s long term development

A key task for the newly established Auckland Council after amalgamation was the development of its over arching Unitary Plan.

The NZ Transport Agency worked closely with other central government agencies, Auckland Transport and Auckland Council on the Auckland (Spatial) Plan. The Auckland Plan sets out the strategic direction for Auckland over the next 30 years.

The Transport Agency has continued to work closely with the same agencies on the proposed Auckland Unitary Plan as well as associated processes related to the rural urban boundary (RUB) and special housing areas.

As a major investor in the transport system, the Transport Agency has a key role to ensure good integration between land use decision making, and transport planning and investment decision making.

We have been working closely with Auckland Council to proactively shape the regional planning context within the Unitary Plan to maximise the transport sectors’ investments across the entire region (setting the framework ‘from the top’).

The proposed plan will also be instrumental in delivering how effectively and efficiently the Transport Agency can develop, operate and maintain its assets
