Work to mitigate safety and noise issues in Ashhurst is entering a new phase, with major works now underway.
Ashhurst and surrounding areas have experienced a significant increase in traffic due to the closure of State Highway 3 through the Manawatū Gorge.
That’s why the NZ Transport Agency, in collaboration with the local community and stakeholders, has developed a package of mitigation measures to deal with safety and noise issues arising from the increase in traffic.
NZTA Portfolio Manager Sarah Downs says while a temporary bypass has been considered as an option for Ashhurst, further investigations on the cost and time to construct have resulted in a decision not to proceed, with resources being prioritised to the full package of mitigation measures.
Some works have already been completed - dangerous trees have been removed from Salisbury Street and pavement rehabilitation has been undertaken between Saddle Road and the Ashhurst entrance to the gorge, including road widening and storm water drains upgrades.
Final design is underway for the next phase of works, which includes:
“Our timeframes are tight but we appreciate we need to move fast for the sake of the people of Ashhurst,” Ms Downs says.
“In the meantime, detailed design will progress on the remainder of the package. This includes work on the side streets off Salisbury Street as well as Salisbury Street and on Cambridge Avenue through the village centre, including the intersection with SH3.”
