The Transport Agency is reminding motorists that from Monday onwards, the temporary diversion on Buckle Street will be closed and motorists will be using the new Arras Tunnel.
Transport Agency acting Wellington highways manager Selwyn Blackmore says the completion of the Arras Tunnel marks a significant milestone towards completing the National War Memorial Park in time for ANZAC Day 2015. The tunnel has been completed a month ahead of program, and traffic will begin to use it overnight Sunday 28th / Monday 29th September (this weekend).
"Getting the tunnel finished a month early is a mighty effort from the Memorial Park Alliance, and they deserve a standing ovation."
“This means the park development can get into gear ahead of next year’s centennial Anzac commemorations."
“We ask that motorists keep their eyes peeled when the tunnel opens because this is a pretty big change and we need everyone to be extra alert until people get used to the new layout.”
Mr Blackmore says motorists need to be aware of changes and observe all signage and directions.
He says the intersection at the top of Tory St will close to traffic at 7pm on Sunday 28th and will remain closed to traffic to enable the park to be developed. This effectively turns the top of Tory St into a cul de sac, and motorists will need to use Taranaki St to access State Highway 1.
Once the Park is completed the connection between Tory St and Tasman St will be re-opened to vehicles.
Mr Blackmore says pedestrian and cycle routes around the site will be maintained, although the routes may vary as work progresses. By law, cycling is not permitted in the tunnel for safety reasons.
Mr Blackmore says the Transport Agency are expecting to see thousands of Wellingtonians turn up tomorrow morning in what will be the last chance for the public to walk through the tunnel before it becomes a wheel-only zone. “We really encourage people to bring their families along, as it’s a once in a lifetime opportunity– your children will be able to tell their kids one day that they walked through the tunnel way back when it opened.”
