The Tauranga Eastern Link (TEL) team delivered another milestone with the opening of the Parton Road overbridge.
The new bridge takes Parton Road over the TEL. It is 67 metres long and 12 metres wide and is one of seven bridges on the project.
NZ Transport Agency senior project manager Wayne Troughton says “after four years of construction on the TEL this is the first bridge opened to the public and is yet another example that we are nearing completion”.
Mr Troughton thanked local drivers for being patient and said that it was “great to be able to have local traffic on the bridge so we can now get in and work on the new pavement going under the bridge”.
Once the TEL is opened and motorists are able to drive under the bridge they will see a mosaic on the sides which represents the flax industry that once stretched from Papamoa through to Maketu. A flax motif can also be found on the panels of the Domain Road interchange, Bell Road underpass and Maketu bridge.
The project is still ahead of schedule and completion is expected later this year.
The TEL is one of seven Roads of National Significance (RoNS) identified by the Government as key to unlocking New Zealand’s potential for economic growth.
