The NZ Transport Agency says it has taken another significant step towards completing Auckland’s Northern Corridor, part of the Government’s accelerated programme of works, by naming a successful consortia to undertake consultation and investigation of the projects on the Northern Motorway (State Highway 1) including the Northern Busway.
The Transport Agency’s Acting Highway Manager for Auckland and Northland, Steve Mutton, says the announcement of the successful team, made up of consultants Beca and Opus, is a positive development after a rigorous evaluation process that began in March.
“The tenderers have been well engaged throughout the process and we’re really impressed with the quality of tenders submitted, and looking forward to getting them on-board to accelerate this project.”
The investigation phase which will run for next 12 – 18 months, will collate information received and issues identified as part of a comprehensive consultation strategy to investigate and identify the preferred option for the Northern Corridor.
“It’s essential to get input from the community, and key stakeholders, into how the area is currently being used, and their future aspirations.
“We’re committed to acting in a transparent manner, keeping them involved and informed throughout the project and ensuring that the feedback we receive is shown in our decisions,” says Mr Mutton.
The first component of the Northern Corridor began construction last December, a $19.5m project to widen the 2km section of the Northern Motorway between Upper Harbour Highway and Greville Road interchange, including improvements to the interchange. This project is being delivered by HEB Construction and due to be completed in May 2015.
Key components of the Northern Corridor programme focus on creating a seamless motorway to motorway connection along the Western Ring Route – the Hobsonville, Northwestern and Southwestern Motorways (SHs18, 16 and 20) - between Albany and Manukau to the south, upgrading the Upper Harbour Highway to a motorway, and extending the successful Northern Busway from Constellation to the Albany park and ride station.
