Carrying passengers on your restricted licence

You can carry certain passengers without an exemption on your restricted licence.

You don’t need to apply for an exemption if you only want to carry:

  • your spouse (a person you live with in the nature of marriage)
  • children who live with you and who are under you or your spouses care (you or your spouse support them financially)
  • your parent or guardian
  • relatives who live with you and who receive a social security benefit (eg the jobseeker support, sole parent or support living payment benefits)
  • someone you look after as their primary (main) caregiver.

You must provide a letter of authority from the parent or guardian of any passengers that are under 18 years old. Upload it in the Documents to support your application section.

 

Are you applying for an exemption for medical reasons?

You must provide a letter from a doctor explaining the medical reason.  Upload it in the Documents to support your application section.

Driving Sam:

  • Monday to Friday to school, Monrad Intermediate School, 228 Botanical Road, Palmerston North between 8am and 8:30am, returning home between 3:15pm and 4pm.
  • Tuesdays to hockey practice, Hockey Manawatu turf, 6 Manawaroa Street, Palmerston North between 4pm and 4:30pm, returning home between 6pm and 6:30pm.

Driving Jenny:

  • Monday to Friday to school, Monrad Intermediate School, 228 Botanical Road, Palmerston North between 8am and 8:30am, returning home between 3:15pm and 4pm.
  • Wednesdays to basketball games, Central Energy Trust Arena, 61 Pascal Street, Palmerston North between 3:40pm and 5:30pm, returning home between 4:30pm and 6:30pm (game times vary).

Do you live with your parents or guardians?

You must provide a letter of authority from your parent or guardian. Upload it in the Documents to support your application section.

Safety considerations

You need to show us that you've considered things like:

  • What risks might there be to myself, my passenger and/or any other road users?
  • How will I minimise these risks?
  • What behaviours will I adopt to make sure that I'm driving safely?

Make sure you've covered off these questions if you can: 

  • How would granting this exemption maintain or improve land transport safety?
  • How would it contribute to an effective, efficient and safe land transport system in the public interest?
  • Does it support the response to an emergency or other event?

The particulars you provide will become part of the Driver Licence Register. Collection, dissemination and release of this information is authorised by the Land Transport Act 1998.

Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency may also use some of these particulars to provide you with information relating to driver licensing and driving. We may also disclose some of the particulars to our agents and contractors in relation to the above purposes.

Details supplied with your application may be used to make such enquiries as are deemed necessary to consider your exemption request.
