The new Setting of Speed Limits Rule (2017) was signed on 21 August 2017 and came into effect on 21 September 2017. The new Rule replaces Speed Limits NZ (SLNZ) with a modernised process for setting speed limits and also allows a maximum speed limit of 110km/h on our very best roads.
In general, the new Rule ensures a more consistent approach to speed management and the setting of speed limits, and will help make travelling by road safer, more predictable and more efficient.
The Tauranga Eastern Link Toll Road (SH2), between the Paengaroa roundabout and Domain Road interchange, and the Cambridge section of the Waikato Expressway (SH1), between the Cambridge Southern and Tamahere interchanges, are the first roads being considered for the 110km/h speed limit. The speed limit will only be increased from 100km/h to 110km/hr on roads which can support higher travel speeds without compromising safety. These first two roads are built to a standard where the higher speed limit is considered both safe and appropriate.
From 26 September to 26 October 2017 the Transport Agency consulted on increasing the speed limit to 110km/h on the Tauranga Eastern Link Toll Road and the Cambridge section of the Waikato Expressway.
If implemented, the new speed limit will be in operation on these two roads before the end of 2017.
