[Text] It's busy, there's no alternative route, too many people are being hurt and killed on it. |

[Text] That's why we'll be moving 'through traffic' off SH1 and SH57, between Ōtaki and north of Levin, onto a brand new highway. |

First and foremost, this project is a safety project. The current stretch of State Highway 1 is one of the most dangerous stretches of state highway on our network and we have a responsibility to make sure not just the community, but all of the road users get where they're going to safely. |

[text] The Ōtaki to north of Levin is delivering a new 24km highway linking Horowhenua and Kāpiti - two growing regions. |

[Text] Funded by the New Zealand Upgrade programme, this $1.5b project is one of the country's largest-ever investments in roading. |

It will include a shared walking and cycling path, grade-separated interchanges, four lanes for traffic and the latest safety features. |

The community have been waiting for Ōtaki to north of Levin for many many years. It's a critical project for them and how they spend time in their town centre, how they use their roads and how they get around for work, for leisure, for recreation. |

[Text] With construction scheduled to begin in 2025, there's a lot of preparation required before building can begin. |

[Text] Besides plotting the road's exact route, we're refining its design features, including what noise reduction technology will be used. |

When people are annoyed by traffic noise it tends to be the clangs and the bangs, the trucks driving past. So with a well-designed road, like what we're doing, it's going to be nice, free-flowing. |
